Argyll and Bute: Discover the Magic of Scotland’s Coastal Getaway

Known for its stunning natural beauty and rich history, Argyll and Bute is a popular getaway for those looking for a tranquil retreat in Scotland. Located on the western coast of the country, the region is made up of towns and villages such as Helensburgh, Inveraray, Oban and the colourful Tobermory, but also includes 23 islands.

Isles of Mull, Iona, and Jura are particularly famous for their pristine beaches and dramatic landscapes offering breath taking scenery including mountains, ancient forests, and crystal-clear waters you might not expect to see in Scotland.

Many first-time visitors plan a trip to Loch Lomond owing to the popularity of The Trossachs National Park and the Loch’s famous song known throughout history, but there’s also a real wealth of things to do in Argyll and Bute you might not have considered before - including seeing the diversity and natural beauty of its islands for yourself.

From coastal villages to historic castles and exciting outdoor adventures, kick start your adventure with us at Loch Fyne Hotel & Spa, situated in the convenient location of Inveraray.

Popular Coastal Spots

From Loch Fyne to Loch Lomond, there are a number of beautiful coastal spots based all across Argyll and Bute. If you’re looking to start your island adventures, consider hopping on the ferry across to the Isle of Bute for a trip back in time.

Isle of Bute has a number of original historic features including B-listed Victorian toilets from 1900 and a museum and visitor centre that was once Winter Gardens and designed in a late Nouveau style made from steel and glass. Mount Stuart, a castle that was once the ancestral home of the Marquesses of Bute, is a must-visit for its stunning intricate ceilings and gothic interiors.

Argyll and Bute is also home to a number of picturesque coastal villages and towns including Tobermory, Campbeltown, Tarbert, Oban, and Inveraray.

Tobermory, on the Isle of Mull (which is easily accessible without a car by the way), is popular with visitors, owing to its colourful houses and fresh seafood. Not to mention, you can enjoy a ‘wee dram’ (a small whisky!) at the Tobermory Distillery and learn all about the whisky-making process.

If you really love seafood, however, you’ll want to make the trip to the ‘Seafood Capital of Scotland’ Oban (also a great trip if you don't have a car) that has a number of restaurants serving local dishes. You can also visit the town’s harbour Oban Bay and enjoy shopping and walking trails. Make sure you stop into Oban Distillery to discover the art of Scotch production and, most of important of all, to enjoy a taste!

For history lovers, take a trip to Inveraray Castle and explore this magnificent castle’s 18th-century architecture, with guided tours available. You can also find a number of outdoor activities including boating, fishing and kayaking around Loch Fyne which stretches out from the town of Inveraray to the nearby village of Tarbert.  There, you can relax and enjoy the town's picturesque harbour and explore the ruins of Tarbert Castle.

Outdoor Activities

From leisurely walks to challenging hikes, there are a number of walking and climbing trails to be discovered in Argyll and Bute with some of the most popular routes including hiking Ben Lomond and exploring the West Highland Way. Ben Lomond offers a challenging yet rewarding ascent for experienced mountaineers through diverse landscapes including forests, rocky terrain, and the iconic "The Cobbler" peak. Make sure you are well prepared for your outdoor adventure and wear appropriate clothes for the Scottish famously fickle weather

Of course, if you prefer adventure on water, Argyll and Bute offers calm waters and stunning scenery, making it ideal for kayaking and canoeing.  Be sure to add Argyll Forest Park to your travel bucket list too if you’re a fan of mountain-biking as the park has a number of excellent trails from Ardgartan, including a circuit round the peninsula. Not to mention, it’s a thrilling spot to sight see and enjoy waterfalls, lochs and local wildlife.

Cultural Sights

Scotland is of course famous for castles and Argyll and Bute has its fair share of them. Alongside the majestic Inveraray Castle, make sure you add Dunollie Castle and Kilchurn Castle to the top of your itinerary. Both have a fascinating history with the original ruins of Dunollie Castle dating back to the 13th and 14th centuries, with evidence of fortifications on the site as early as the 6th century.

Kilchurn Castle is located on the banks of the picturesque banks of Loch Awe and is one of the most photographed castles in Scotland owing to its dramatic setting and imposing appearance. The castle was built in the mid-1400s by the Campbells of Glenorchy and has a long and fascinating history.

Visitors can explore the castle's interior, including its chambers and towers, and enjoy stunning views of the Loch and the surrounding countryside.

If you’re looking to explore more ancient ruins, stopping by Kilmartin Glen is a must. More than 350 ancient monuments lie within a six mile radius of the village of Kilmartin located between Oban and Lochgilphead, with 150 of them being prehistoric.

To complete your historic tour, consider visiting Iona Abbey as the birthplace of many Scottish kings and queens, head to the Oban War and Peace Museum to learn the story of Oban's involvement in the Second World War and the Cold War, glimpse into life behind bars in the 19th century with Inveraray Jail and discover the stunning art and architecture of Hill House, designed by Charles Rennie Mackintosh in 1902.
