What are the Highland Games?
The Highland Games are a celebration of Scotland’s Celtic heritage. They have been a popular fixture on Scottish calendars for hundreds of years. The games also host traditional piping, drumming, and highland dancing events, many of which are unique to these lands.
Where are Perthshire’s Highland Games held?
Aberfeldy Show and Games Friday 9th and Saturday 10th August 2019
Set within the stunning Perthshire hills, the two day event takes place near Aberfeldy’s famous Wade Bridge. Friday involves horse and pony classes, show classes, and a pet show. Whilst Saturday showcases the farmer’s championships, dancing and heavyweight competitions, and carrying the Menzies stone.
The Crieff Highland Gathering dates back to 1870. Attracting around 6000 people each year, the games host an array of traditional events. In particular the Scottish Heavyweight Championship Running and Salute to the Chieftain. Two fantastic events not to be missed.
Held on the last Saturday of August, the Birnam Highland Games attract some of the most outstanding competitors on the Games circuit. With a programme of piping, dancing, track and field, and heavyweight events you’ll be entertained the whole day.
Blairgowrie and Rattray Highland Games Sunday 8th September 2019
Welcoming visitors from the local community and further afield. The Blairgowrie and Rattray Highland Games offers events and attractions for the whole family. Young aspiring highlanders can take part in their very own Mini Highland Games. After which the professionals take centre stage for a full programme of traditional games and events.
Pitlochry Highland Games Saturday 14th September 2019
Last year the Pitlochry Highland Games attracted 7000 spectators from around the world. A spectacular street parade of pipe bands takes place at 11.45am. Followed by traditional piping and dancing events and more athletic events of track and field, tossing the caber, and putting the stone.
