VISITING SARAH NELSON’S GINGERBREAD SHOP

In 1854 the famous Grasmere Gingerbread was invented by Victorian cook Sarah Nelson right here in the village. The popularity of this unique, spicy-sweet cross between a biscuit and cake has quickly spread all over the world. Visiting the shop itself is quite an experience with it remaining largely unaltered, you will be greeted by staff in traditional Victorian uniform.

RAVENGLASS & ESKDALE RAILWAY

A favourite of Alfred Wainwright, the Ravenglass and Eskdale Railway is one of the oldest and longest narrow gauge railways in England. Taking 40 minutes, you will venture through the protected nature reserves of the Ravenglass Estuary through ancient woodlands and fells of the Eskdale Valley.

HIRE A BOAT ON GRASMERE

Explore Grasmere from a new perspective whilst rowing out on Grasmere Lake. Hire a boat from the shore at Faeryland and explore the water which stretches one mile long. You can get some great photos from this viewpoint of the surrounding Lakeland fells so don’t forget your camera!

COMPLETE A WAINWRIGHT WALK

Take to the hills and complete on the 214 fells described in the seven volume Pictorial Guides to the Lakeland Fells by Alfred Wainwright. Like many, you may get the hiking bug and want to complete all 214 of them! Just ask our in house Concierge, Steve, for the best route for you.

EXPLORE LAKE WINDERMERE ABOARD A STEAMER

Explore the beauty of England’s largest lake, Lake Windermere aboard a steamer boat in the heart of the Lake District. You will have the most spectacular view from the water of the Lakeland fells. You can explore the length of the lake stopping at Lakeside, Bowness Bay, Brockhole and Ambleside.

SWING THROUGH THE TREES AT BROCKHOLE

Brockhole is one of the area’s largest visitor centers with an abundance of activities for all the family. Choose from archery, pony trekking, watersports, a large outdoor adventure playground and not forgetting Tree Top Trek! A perfect day out for all the family.

VISIT THE LAKES DISTILLERY

Take a tour of the Lake District’s very own distillery discovering how they make whisky, gin and vodka as well as sampling them for yourself! Located just near Bassenthwaite Lake the distillery is also home to a great Bistro so why not make a day of it?

HAVE A DRINK IN THE OLDEST PUB IN BOWNESS – HOLE IN T’ WALL

The Hole in t’ Wall is a hidden gem nestled within ‘old Bowness’. New Hall Inn (as it was originally named) soon became known as The Hole in t’ Wall thanks to the gap in the brickwork which was knocked through so that the blacksmith could be served beer whilst working. Built in 1612, not a lot has changed at this charming pub. Rich in heritage this pub was a favourite of famous poet Charles Dickens, it has charm and character you won’t help but fall in love with.

VISIT THE HOME OF BEATRIX POTTER

Nestled within Near Sawrey near Hawkshead is famous children’s writer Beatrix Potter’s former 17th century farmhouse. Some of her characters lived at Hill Top including Tom Kitten and Samuel and Anna Maria Whiskers. Now open to the public as a writer’s house museum, Hill Top provides a time capsule of Beatrix Potter’s life.
