Christmas truly is the most wonderful time of the year. The snow is falling, the carols are playing, and the mulled wine is flowing – what could be better? At the Daffodil Hotel & Spa, we’re blessed with a magical array of festive fun and enchanting activities on our doorstep every year, but Christmas is the season for sharing So, we’re gifting you a list of the best things to do in the Lake District National Park at Christmas to ensure your holiday getaway ticks all the boxes.

OUTDOOR CHRISTMAS ACTIVITIES

Want to get out on a wintery walk amid the Lake District scenery and fill your lungs with the cold, crisp air? Our list of outdoor Christmas activities is just what the doctor ordered.

WALKS AROUND THE WINTER WONDERLAND

The Lake District is famed worldwide for its mountains and hiking trails, but these become even more enchanting as the seasons change. Slip into a sturdy pair of boots and a warm

coat, and you’re all set to delight in the stunning scenery of Cumbria’s fells, lakes and forests.

Some of our favourite walks start from the quaint village of Grasmere. Take the gently winding path up to Easedale Tarn to take in the views of this glacial mountain lake set amongst imposing peaks. The walk is well-signposted from the centre of Grasmere and is suitable for hikers of all ages. On the ascent from the valley floor to the tarn, be sure to watch out for the impressive Sour Milk Gill – a tumbling torrent of white water named for its likeness to milk!

Beyond Grasmere, take a stroll around Derwentwater or Windermere for breathtaking waterside views and crisp winter air. Or, if you’re visiting with younger adventurers, consider exploring the Keswick Railway Footpath or the Catbells hike for spectacular scenery without the challenging ascents.

Top tip: We can’t promise Rudolph, but keep an eye out for native Roe deer amongst the trees and foliage as you walk!

LAKE CRUISES

If you think that Christmas cruises are only for winter sun-seekers, think again! Some of the Lake District’s most impressive bodies of water offer cruises all year round, including over the festive period.

Lake Windermere, Ullswater, Coniston Water and Derwentwater all have themed boat rides to get you into the Christmas spirit whilst enjoying the wintery scenery. Some cruises even offer mince pies, live Christmas carol singers and glasses of mulled wine to enhance the festive atmosphere!

LOCAL CHRISTMAS LIGHTS

Many of the Lake District’s towns and villages have magical Christmas lights, which are sure to get you into the festive spirit.

From real Christmas trees adorned with twinkling lights and captivating colours to whole streets illuminated with festive fun, Christmas light displays are not one you’ll want to miss!

The Ambleside Christmas lights are a firm favourite amongst locals and visitors alike. Just a stone’s throw from Grasmere past Rydal Water, Ambleside’s annual Christmas light switch-on attracts people from far and wide.

CHRISTMAS MARKETS

No festive break would be complete without a trip to a Christmas market or two! Think live music, mugs of hot chocolate and mulled wine, mince pies, and maybe even a guest appearance from Father Christmas himself.

Here, you’ll have a chance to do some last-minute Christmas shopping for loved ones, with a fantastic selection of festive food, local produce and homemade crafts on offer from the Lake District’s finest artisans.

Two of our favourite Lake District Christmas markets are in Keswick and Windermere. Festive cheer and seasonal goodies are in no short supply at both!

INDOOR ACTIVITIES

When you want to retreat inside the cold after a long day taking in the stunning scenery, feast your eyes on this list of fantastic indoor activities and festive events.

FESTIVE SHOPPING

The Lake District is home to a bounty of independent shops selling Christmas decorations, clothes, and the perfect gifts for your loved ones.

Spend an hour or two browsing the shops in Windermere, Ambleside, Kendal or Grasmere, and you’ll struggle to leave empty-handed.

THE WORLD OF BEATRIX POTTER

The World of Beatrix Potter attraction provides fun for all the family year-round, Christmas included. Immerse yourself in the enchanting world of Peter Rabbit and his friends. Perfect for a cosy, indoor day filled with nostalgia.

Be sure to book tickets in advance, though, as this is hugely popular with tourists on day trips and staycations.

THE RHEGED CENTRE

If the weather outside is frightful, head inside to experience the entertainment delights at the Rheged Centre in Penrith. Here you’ll find a cinema, art gallery, heritage centre and more, all under one roof. Keep an eye out for special Christmas events, too, like the celebrated Christmas pantomimes that run all month from early December.

SPA DAYS

Spend Christmas relaxing in style by treating yourself to a spa treatment at one of the Lake District’s best resorts. You have to be looking your best for the big day!
